Fibre to the Cabinet - FTTC

Powernet - Fibre to the Cabinet or FTTC, is ideal for business users who demand high bandwidth at an affordable price. Fibre to the Cabinet offers download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10Mbps, though FTTC customers can realistically expect to get 30-36Mbps download speeds due to a variety of factors (distance from cabinet and contention of service). Because FTTC offers such high performance it is a viable alternative for businesses previously using expensive leased lines or ethernet circuits.

What's new about FTTC?

Not much in reality, from an end-user perspective FTTC works in much the same way as ADSL-based broadband, except that it is much faster. FTTC customers may need to invest in a new router that supports PPPoE but apart from that FTTC is like broadband but faster.

The introduction of FTTC around the UK has meant the replacement of BT green cabinets with larger monoliths that can handle the kit (DSLANS) needed to provide FTTC to surrounding premises. FTTC still uses existing telephone lines to deliver broadband to your premises, but from the cabinet in the street to your local telephone exchange fibre optic cable is used to carry the broadband signal. Because fibre is carrying the broadband signal for the majority of its journey you get a much faster service.

Before you Order FTTC Check the Following:

1. Make sure your premises are in an area that can receive FTTC. Enter your telephone number in the availability checker at the top of this page to see if you can get FTTC. If you are not near an FTTC enabled exchange then Powernet may be able to offer alternative connectivity, such as our bonded solution. BT have made a commitment to make two-thirds of the UK FTTC enabled by 2015. It may be worth contacting BT directly for an ETA on when they are going to deliver FTTC in your area.
2. You will need a live BT phone line running into your premises.
3. FTTC requires an engineer to visit your premises on the day of activation. A convenient date for the visit can be specified and you will be given an AM or PM slot for the engineer visit.
4. Your FTTC engineer will install a new Openreach faceplate over your BT master socket along with a VDSL2 Modem, meaning you will need a power socket available near the BT master socket.
5. A router that can process PPPoE will also be required and connected to the VDSL2 modem via an Ethernet cable.
6. If you are running a wireless LAN make sure it has the capacity to carry the increased bandwidth FTTC will deliver. A wireless network that supports the 802.11n standard should provide sufficient capacity to support FTTC. Powernet recommends running a wired LAN to support the speed of FTTC.
