Security of transmission and receipt is maintained by a technique known as 'tunnelling'. Cryptographic protocols are applied to traffic sent over the Virtual Private Network; this cryptography is removed as the VPN connects with the firewall at its destination - effectively creating a secure tunnel through the firewall for trusted traffic.
